After Andrei Rublev's 'Trinity'

Jennifer Crow

Father, Son, Holy Ghost
dressed in rich robes
purple as a spill of grapes--

he captures them
sitting around a table
casual as you or I

caught in mid-gesture--
“And that’s when I said to Lucifer--”
before they realize mortals watch.

Overhead, dark doorways
hang in mid-air, perhaps awaiting
the heavenly retreat

or some arrival we cannot imagine.
Is this how God travels?
a word or thought, a door

and a destination?  Or should we warn
the Trinity to watch
their backs, that something unexpected

comes upon them from above, an epiphany
of wings and teeth, a gaping maw
hungry for immortal flesh?
